What is Free Range?
In April 2017 the Australian Government released new guidelines for free range egg labelling.
These Government guidelines classifies free range as:
up to 10,000 hens per hectare (100m2)
this ONLY applies to the hen’s outdoor area
there are NO restrictions on how many hens are kept together in indoor areas
there are NO requirements as to how much time the hens actually get to spend outside
Government guidelines fall well short of international and RSPCA free range standards.
Europe and UK allow a maximum of 2,500 hens per hectare.
RSPCA recommends a maximum of 1,500 hens per hectare
Australia allow a maximum of 10,000 hens per hectare
Myrtlebank farm has 1000 hens roaming though 180 hectares
The Humane Society International believes "The Government has put the interests of big business before small free range businesses, animal welfare and consumers.” They advise consumers to “look beyond that free range label, because unfortunately thanks to our government we can't trust it.”
